SHAREing & CAREing co-hosted an outreach event with Mt. Sinai Hospital, Queens on March 23, 6:00PM in honor of Colon Cancer Awareness Month at Riccardo’s by the Bridge. The outreach focused on colon cancer, and was free and open to the Queens community.
The event featured presentations by Dr. Brijen Shah, who spoke about the prevalence of colon cancer as well as the importance of colon cancer screenings. He talked about the latest developments and public health strategies to increase screenings for those who are most at risk. Malini D. Sur, MD, a surgical oncologist at Mount Sinai Queens, presented on surgical techniques and prevention strategies to reduce risk for colon and other cancers.
Both doctors were personable, approachable and knowledgeable. They were able to turn a challenging topic into an accessible one. Participants felt comfortable to ask specific and sometimes personal questions. Based on participant feedback, the doctors thoughtful and caring approach helped people address and resolve their own fears and misinformation about this issue. Participants indicated they felt ready to pursue obtaining appropriate colon cancer screening and inform and encourage family members as well.
SHAREing & CAREing staffed an information table throughout the program to help people access additional services through our organization, including counseling, and referrals to linkages and health care.
