About You

This information allows us to give you screening recommendations based on your background. If you’d prefer to manually set your reminders, go to the previous page and set reminders as “manual.”
I have (or used to have)…
My Personal History
My Family History
My Smoking History
My Pack Years*
A pack year is the equivalent of smoking 1 pack of cigarettes (20 cigarettes) per day for a year. 20 pack years could be smoking: 20 cigarettes per day for 20 years, or 10 cigarettes per day for 40 years, or 40 cigarettes per day for 10 years.

Physical Reminders

Physicals are general checkups with your primary care doctor that go over basic preventative healthcare and concerns. Most people should get physicals annually and everyone should see a doctor regularly.
We recommend everyone get an annual physical.

We recommend you do your physical appointment first to set a health baseline and determine proper screenings.

Breast Self-Exam Reminders

Breast self-exams (BSEs) are free 20-minute checks you make of your own breasts in the privacy of your own home. Anyone who has (or has ever had) breasts or has a family or personal history of breast cancer should do breast self-exams at the same time of the month every month.

Because you said you don’t have (and never had) breasts and no personal or family history of breast cancer, we don’t recommend you do a monthly BSE. Always check with your doctor if you notice anything abnormal.
Because you said you have (or used to have) breasts or you have a family or personal history of breast cancer, we recommend you do a monthly breast self-exam.

If you have a menstrual cycle, avoid the week before your period when breasts are more tender. We recommend starting BSEs before going to your OB/GYN exam so that you can address any questions with your doctor.

OB/GYN Visit Reminders

These regular exams with an OB/GYN doctor (which stands for obstetrics and gynecology) are where you can address concerns and preventative healthcare involving pregnancy, menstrual cycles, sexually transmitted diseases, and vaginal, ovarian, uterine, and breast health. In these visits patients are regular screened for cervical cancer with a pap smear. If you have (or have ever had) breasts, a uterus, ovaries, or a vagina, we recommend seeing an OB/GYN once per year.

Because you said you don’t have (or never had) breasts, ovaries, a vagina or uterus, we don’t recommend you do an annual OB/GYN visit.
Because you said you have (or or used to have) breasts, ovaries, a vagina or a uterus, we recommend you do an annual OB/GYN visit.

If you have a menstrual cycle, avoid that time period. We recommend starting BSEs before going to your OB/GYN exam so that you can address any questions with your doctor.

Genetic Testing Reminder

Genetic tests screen for particular gene mutations that could lead to certain hereditary cancers. Those with a personal or family history of these cancers or whose who are of Ashkenazi Jewish descent would benefit from genetic testing with analysis by a trained genetic counselor.

Because you have been diagnosed with cancer or Lynch syndrome, we recommend talking to your doctor about genetic testing. Knowing if a gene mutation is the cause of your disease will help target treatment options and plan a cancer screening schedule.
Because you have a family history of cancer, Lynch syndrome, the BRCA gene mutation or you’re of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, we recommend talking to your doctor about genetic testing.
Because you said you didn’t have a personal or family history with cancer, we don’t recommend you do a genetic test.

We recommend talking to your doctor first, so schedule this test after your physical or OB/GYN visit.

Mammogram Reminders

Mammograms are an X-ray image of the chest and are used to detect breast cancer. These imaging tests are recommended every 1-2 years for anyone over 50, who has (or used to have) breasts, and is at average risk for breast cancer.

Because you said you were over 50 and have (or used to have) breasts we recommend getting a regular mammogram. Check with your doctor about the frequency appropriate to your risk level.
Because you said that you’re under 50 years old, we don’t recommend a regular mammogram yet. But check with your doctor—you may want to start earlier if you have symptoms, or have above-average risk factors like the BRCA gene mutation, a personal or family history, or another breast condition.
Because you said you don’t have (and have never had) breasts, we don’t recommend you do a regular mammogram, but if you have a chest abnormality speak with your doctor.

Lung CT Scan Reminders

A low dose lung CT Scan (LDCT) is an x-ray image of your chest. It is used to screen for lung cancer. You should be regularly screened for lung cancer if you are over 50 and currently smoke or have smoked in the last 15 years and have accumulated 20 pack years.

We do not recommend a lung CT scan for you because you said you were either under 50, had never smoked, or were a quitter with less than 20 pack years. It’s a good idea to double-check with your doctor, though.
Because you said you were over 50 and have accumulated more than 20 pack years before you quit smoking we recommend getting a regular lung CT scan. Check with your doctor about the frequency appropriate to your risk level.
Because you said you were over 50 and are a current smoker we recommend getting a regular lung CT scan. Check with your doctor about the frequency appropriate to your risk level.

Testicular Self-Exam Reminders

A testicular self-exam helps detect testicular cancer early and can be done for free in the privacy of your own home. For those at risk for this cancer, it should be done monthly.

Because you said you don’t have (and have never had) testicles we do not recommend a testicular self-exam.
Because you said you have (or used to have) testicles you might want to consider a testicular self-exam. Talk to your doctor to see if your risk levels make this exam appropriate.

Colorectal Cancer Screening Reminders

Colorectal cancer can be screened for using a number of tests including a colonoscopy, stool tests, a CT colonography (virtual colonoscopy) or a flexible sigmoidoscopy. Most people of average risk should begin regularly screening at the age of 45.

Because you’re over 45 years old we recommend a regular colorectal screening. Ask your doctor about the appropriate test method and frequency for your situation.
Because you’re under 45 years old we don’t recommend a colorectal screening. If you have risk factors or a family history, it’s good to ask your doctor if you should start earlier.
